Course Announcements

1. Our lab on Monday, February 6 and Tuesday, February 7 is our tidepooling field trip to Devereux/Coal Oil Point. Please wear clothes that can get WET - I would suggest you wear swimtrunks or similar. You must wear footwear that can get wet such as sandals, rubber boots or old tennis. You will be getting wet at least up to your knees. Please get together with your labmates to plan carpools. Be sure everyone is clear where and when to meet to make it to the fieldtrip site on time. There is no quiz at the fieldtrip lab.

Bring a copy of Lab #24 with you to the fieldtrip. There is a link to a map under Lab #24 on the Labs page of the website. We will meet by the eucalyptus trees on the blufftop near where you park at the following times (to get give you time to drive out to the fieldtrip site). Do not walk down to the beach. We will walk down all together.

2. Be sure to bring a copy of Lab #5 to lab on
Wednesday, February 8 or Thursday, February 9.

3. Quiz #4 in lab on Wednesday, February 8 or Thursday, February 9 will be on terms related to sponges including taxonomy, cell types and theories of metazoan evolution from the board in lab and key concepts from the last lab.

4. The guidelines for the Oral Lab Presentation are posted on the Paper Guidelines page under Reviews & Skills. Be sure to read these guidelines and start thinking about a topic for this invertebrate project. (or click here for a link to the oral presentation guidelines)

You should be researching your topic for the presentation. You must submit the topic for your presentation to me via email or paper copy by no later than
Monday, February 20.

5. Your third distance learning assignment on the Atoms, Chemical Bonds and Basic Biomolecules can be found on the Assignments page above. Type up the answers and print out this assignment and turn it in to Blake or to the box in the Biological Sciences Office (EBS 212) by no later than 5 pm on Thursday, February 9.

You may also turn in ANY late assignments and labs for credit (there will be a point deduction for being late).

6. Be sure to look up information about the biological effects of oil spills for lecture.
Also be sure to look up answers to the following questions about malaria for Exam #1:

What 3 specific species cause most cases of malaria?
Globally, where does malaria most frequently occur?
What are the symptoms of malaria?
What are the treatments for malaria?
Click here for a link to an animation showing the lifecycle of malaria. You should know this lifecycle for the first lecture exam. There are good descriptions and diagrams in the text.

7. You should plan a time to go to Lake Los Carneros and complete the freshwater ecology individual field trip lab. There is a link with directions to the lake on the Labs page of this site. Wear comfortable shoes and clothes. This is Lab #25 and it should be completed by going out to the lake with some friends or family and walking around the lake paying close attention to the natural environment. Use all your senses, look for animals, examine the plants, peruse the lake, look for biological interactions, look for decomposition and small critters. Bring a pair of binoculars and a bird guide if you have them. Hone your skills of observation. Complete the homework questions in the lab after your field excursion and turn the lab in by no later than Monday, February 27 at 5 pm to me or the box in EBS 212.

8. You should be reviewing the lecture notes indicated on the Bulletins page under Lecture Notes above for the first exam which will be on Wednesday, February 22. Use the weblinks on the Lecture Notes page to help you better understand the lecture material.

9. Blake will have a review session for the first exam on
Tuesday, February 21 from 11:30 am to 12:30 am in EBS 209.

10. You should be reading the following chapters in the Hickman textbook in preparation for the first exam - chapters 1, 2, 3, 4 (basics), 6, 9, 10, 11, 12, 37, 38

11. We will be discussing the oral lab presentation and lab practica requirements more next week in class. Oral presentations are in lab on Monday, March 5 and Tuesday, March 6.

12. Tutor hours for Biology 102 are:

Friday - 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
The computer lab is closed on the weekends.

PERTINENT CAMPUS EVENTS:

1. There is a seminar presentation Friday, February 10 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm
in EBS 309 for the Biology 291 Seminar. All are welcome to attend, you need not be enrolled in the Bio 291 class. The seminar will be by Peter Aguilar from SBCC's own Department of Biological Sciences on Kinesiology.

2. Internships in Nanosystems Science, Engineering and Technology (INSET)
applications are due by Monday, February 27th. Click here for an info flyer about INSET.
Many Biology students have received this internship in the past.

3. Financial Aid Office Campus Scholarship Applications are due by early March. You must submit this application online to the Financial Aid Office by the deadline to be considered for ALL Biological Sciences Departmental Scholarships (except for the Olivarius Scholarship).
